Maura C. Muldoon
PhD Natural Resources Student

About

Maura C. Muldoon is an environmental social scientist passionate about interdisciplinary science and science communication. She has contributed to multiple interdisciplinary research projects including the Collaborative Network for Valuing Earth Information (CONVEI) and the 2025 Vermont Climate Assessment.

Maura is currently a doctoral student at the University of Vermont in the Natural Resources department co-advised by Dr. Rachelle Gould and Dr. Gillian Galford. Her work focuses on the non-material values of nature and she hopes to advance our understanding of how technology-mediated experiences of nature – technologies like satellite images, nature documentaries, virtual reality, and nature-cams – shape our perceptions and values of nature.

As a PhD student at UVM, Maura has had the unique opportunity to gain mentorship and project management skills. She has mentored and supervised 12 undergraduate research assistants in various research projects and tasks including literature review, focus groups, thematic coding, and data processing. She has also gained teaching experience as a co-instructor for Environmental Education and a teaching assistant for Social Processes and the Environment.

Prior to joining UVM, Maura received a Master of Science degree in Global Prosperity from University College of London (UCL) where she studied transformative change through a justice and sustainability lens using ecological economics, mixed-methods research, and participatory design. Her thesis combined ecosystem service valuation and scenario analysis to explore future land use scenarios for a coastal brownfield wetland in England.

In a former life, Maura received a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics with a minor in French from the University of Alabama. Outside of research, Maura spends time writing, camping, swimming in lakes and rivers, playing the harp, and photographing birds and mushrooms.
